New IBFNEWS.TV Channel

It's no secret that video on the internet is growing in popularity at an incredible rate. This is being driven by the relatively low cost of broadband and the increasing availability of the tools to make web videos (cameras and software). Not to mention websites like youtube.com which make it very easy to put videos on line for all the world to see.

Video is also a great way to communicate - how much time do we spend watching TV compared with reading newspapers or magazines? A LOT more.

To take advantage of the 'Internet Video Revolution' here at the IBF and make sure that we're doing the best we can to communicate with the whole IBF community, we've created our own IBF News Internet TV Channel or IBFNEWS.TV for short. By typing IBFNEWS.TV into your browser you'll be redirected to the IBF website where all of our web videos will be hosted.

Our first video is already live - filmed at the recent IBF Staff Christmas Picnic and it's been great fun putting it together so expect to see more coming soon.

We're excited about this new channel as a means of communicating all sorts of news from the IBF and by all means feel free to contact us if you have ideas about what you'd like to see.

Padre Pio Open Day

The IBF was pleased to host our first family and friends’ fun day on Sunday 19th September in memory of Padre Pio.

Over 200 people joined the celebrations that included cooking demonstrations, food tastings and a delicious lunch. Activities such as face painting and the chocolate wheel kept the children smiling and coming back for more. Throughout the day visitors enjoyed a beautiful performance by the Mary McKillop “Ital Canti” group and Attilio ensured that all remained entertained. A very special thank you goes to Father John Rate who only returned from an overseas trip the day prior to this event and a provide us with a very special and warm blessing in memory of Padre Pio.

The day was officially opened by IBF’s Chief Executive Officer Mr Daniel Desteno; Daniel talked about the importance of cultural appropriate services and welcomed all family and friends. Other special guest included Mrs Rita DeLuca, Mrs Flavia DePasquale, Mr Cesare LaStella and Mr Silvio Iadarola. Our sincere thanks go to all family and friends who came to join us to celebrate this event and to see how their loved ones are cared for whilst attending our centre based programs. Il IBF è stata liete di avere la prima giornata di apertura e di divertimento per le famiglie e gli amici. La giornata si è svolta Domenica 19 Settembre ed era in memoria di Padre Pio.

Oltre 200 persone hanno partecipato ai festeggiamenti che comprendevano dimostrazioni di cucina, degustazioni e un delizioso pranzo. Altre attività come le facce dipinte il gioco della ruota con il cioccolato per la contentezza dei bambini che tornavano in continuazione. Per tutto il giorno i visitatori sono stati intrattenuti dal gruppo Mary McKillop “Ital Canti” e da Attilio garantendo per tutti un buon divertimento. Porgiamo un ringraziamento particolare a Padre John Rate, che il giorno prima di questo evento era ritornato da un viaggio all’estero ed e’ venuto appositamente per impartire la Benedizione speciale alla memoria di Padre Pio.

Questa giornata è stata ufficialmente aperta dal CEO dell’ IBF il Sig. Daniel Desteno; Daniel ha dato il benvenuto a tutte le famiglia e gli amici ed ha parlato dell’importanza di avere degli adeguati servizi che siano culturalmente appropriati. Abbiamo avuto anche degli altri ospiti speciali tra cui la signora Rita Deluca, la signora Flavia DePasquale, ed i signori Cesare Lastella e Silvio Iadarola.

Vogliamo dare un sicero ringraziamento a tutti i familiari e gli amici che hanno preso parte all’evento per celebrare con noi questo evento e per constatare come i loro cari sono accuditi quando frequentano i nostri programmi basati al centro.

IBF College Student Profile: Gabby Tirimacco

Gabby is undertaking her Certificate III in Aged Care. Having lots of current working experience in Community Services we were able to recognise many of these skills and grant recognition of prior learning. The best part was this helped Gabby to reduce units she had to study, course time and cost.

Gabby joined IBF about 15 months ago and currently works at the Domus Operosa site. After having children, Gabby entered the Aged Care industry, working in an ancillary role and now works for the Benvenuti program funded by the National Respite for Carers Program helping and assisting clients and carers. She loves working with everyone in the program and finds great satisfaction talking with all the clients and listening to their wonderful stories from present and past. She even gets to keep up her cooking skills and help run tasty cooking classes with the clients!

Working full time, supporting an active family and studying Certificate III in Aged Care is keeping Gabby very busy. This is an important qualification for Gabby’s role at work and with the assistance of Janet Oswald (her facilitator), and the whole team from IBF Healthcare College, Gabby is being well supported and progressing well through her qualification. Gabby works hard to carefully balance all of her commitments and is enjoying the opportunity to learn more about the industry she is working.

Gabby is just one of many we have studying with us. We acknowledge and thank everybody who gives their time to learn new things and in the famous words of Beverly Sills, ‘There are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going’.

IBF College - Flexible Learning Explained

We live in a modern world, full of diversity and individuality. We all have different needs and demands and that’s what makes us unique! You could be married with 3 kids or maybe you prefer the company of a well loved pet (or three)! You may have a spare 20 hours a week to devote to your studies or you could be (like most people) time poor and struggle to find that extra 25th hour!

Whatever the individual situation, IBF Healthcare College has developed a mode of study that is a little different to traditional methods of teaching and addresses the diversity of our learners. We refer to this as ‘distance learning’ or ‘flexible, self-directed learning’.

This mode of study gives the greatest flexibility when juggling all of life’s important commitments. You choose the most appropriate time, location and pace of study best suited for you. This may be somewhere at work, home or even here at the College. In addition, we may offer workshops or network opportunities to put you in contact with other learners.

Flexible delivery enables you to complete qualifications within time-frames you think are achievable. You will not attend formal classes but you will use that time to personally research and complete the materials given. The most important aspect of flexible delivery is that you maintain total control on what, when and how you do things.

Di Burness joins IBF

In May 2010 IBF welcomed Di Burness to the Community Packaged Care Programs in the eastern region, as the Community Health Care Specialist / Advisor.

Di has spent over 30 years in the aged care industry, notably with Southern Cross Care as Deputy General Manager / Health Advisor Retirement Services and in the last year with D&B Consulting as National Care Manager.

Di brings to IBF a wealth of knowledge in working with aged persons and in working with persons from varying cultures. Whilst at D&B Consulting Di was involved in providing Community Packages to the Aboriginal communities throughout the Northern Territory and northern Queensland. Her experience in managing Community Packages as well as providing information services to clients of Southern Cross Retirement Villages is highly regarded within the community services field.

As a Registered Nurse, Di will be providing medical assessments for IBF clients who are receiving Extended Aged Care at Home packages, as well as providing training and support to our care staff and Coordinators. We are also fortunate to have Di as a Justice of the Peace, which has come in extremely useful over the last few months.

We are delighted to have Di on board and we are looking forward to a long working relationship with her. Already her vibrant personality has ensured that staff and clients are forming a great rapport and trust with her.

Lot's Happening at IBF Domus Operosa

It seems the past few months have been one activity after another at IBF Domus Operosa - here's a quick recap of what's been happening:

Pioneer City Band

On August 12th IBF Domus Operosa residents were treated to the music of the Pioneer City Band.

The band had been reduced in numbers due to the small size of our room, however their performance was tremendous and all who attended had a wonderful and enjoyable time.

The Italian Singers

The Famous Italian Singers performed for the residents of IBF Domus Operosa on July 22nd.

37 residents attended this concert. The Italian singers really got the residents going as they were singing, laughing and having a really good time. At the conclusion of the concert the residents and Italian Singers alike did not want to end the performance.Everyone is looking forward to their next visit.

The Stars of the Nile

On July 28th a touch of Egypt arrived at IBF Domus Operosa when the Stars of the Nile performed for our residents Surprise Activity.

The Stars of the Nile brought a colourful flair and opulent costuming to this month’s surprise activity. Residents were spellbound and totally delighted with this performance. They were enchanted by listening to the beautiful Middle Eastern music, while being entertained with glamour, talent and total visual stimulation. Their ability to dance with such a large sword & handle that weapon with both precision and grace was a very impressive sight. This performance was uplifting, exciting and elegant entertainment

The Jonny Wonny Show

August’s surprise activity at IBF Domus Operosa was an act called “The Johnny Wonny Show”.

Johnny Wonny is a skilled ventriloquist who entertained our residents with his wonderful performance, singing beautifully. Johnny was accompanied by his two friends, The Singing Chicken, who delighting his audience and had them in fits of laughter and later in the show we had a visit from grandpa, who was just adorable and just so funny. What a treat he was captivating his audience and also having them in fits of laughter. At the conclusion of the show our residents gave Johnny Wonny a great round of applause and can’t wait for a return visit. The residents throughout the day made many comments on how much they enjoyed this show.

The Just Us Concert

The Just Us concert was a full house and a great success.

All residents had a wonderful time and spent the rest of the day talking about how good the concert was.

Recognition for Service Excellence

The Service Excellence Program is an internationally accredited quality improvement program funded by the Department for Families and Communities.
Mass Genovese attended the recent Service Excellence Recognition Ceremony representing IBF to recognise the successful achievement of Service Excellence at Aldridge Court.

In November 2009 an assessment was conducted at Aldridge Court and Certificate Level was attained for the achievements in excellence and delivery of services in accordance with sound management principles and legal requirements that is aligned with strategic priorities.
Jenny Payne is to be congratulated for her work in achieving service excellence at Aldridge Court with a 100% compliance rate through good practice in service delivery.

We interview Michelle Glenn, Nurse Manager at IBF Campbelltown.

“Tell us a little about yourself”

I’m 35 years old and I have worked with the IBF for the last 16 years.

I decided that I wanted to enter into the nursing profession when I was in High school. I believed that nursing would offer an interesting and challenging career path. To this day, it has fulfilled and often exceeded my expectations.

I enjoy the interaction with Residents, Relatives and staff that the Aged care sector provides.

In my “down time” I enjoy travelling, cooking and reading. I live in the Adelaide Hills with my husband of 10 years.

“Describe your typical day.”

What I find challenging in Aged Care is that there is no such thing as a “typical day”. Everyday new hurdles present themselves. In the role of the Nurse Manager, I find myself undertaking various roles such as counsellor, mediator, educator, clinical practitioner, administrator, financial planner... .the list is endless.

“Tell us about your career history.”

I commenced my employment with the IBF in 1994 as a care worker at Montrose Nursing Home whist undertaking my Bachelor of Nursing studies at UniSA. On completion of my studies I commenced working as a Registered Nurse at Montrose and undertook a 12 month external Graduate program through the Ashford Hospital. In 1998 I was appointed as the Clinical Nurse and in 2000 took on the Clinical Nurse Consultant role.

In 2004, Montrose NH was closed to make way for the Burton site. At this time I resumed my role as CNC at Campbelltown RACF. In September of 2008, I was promoted to my current role of Nurse Manager.

“What do you consider your most significant accomplishments?”

Each single accomplishment so far in my career I consider to be significant. Each step I’ve undertaken throughout my career thus far has provided me with the foundations to work within my current role as a Nurse Manager.

From my very first job as a care worker to my current role, each stage has provided me with experiences and knowledge to further my development and career path within the organisation.

“How do you define success?”

Success to me is having contented Resident’s, staff and relatives. Finding favourable resolutions to issues with a collaborative approach, I believe is the key to ensuring the environment is a pleasure to both live and work in .

Consumer Reference Group Luncheon

The Consumer Reference Group held its annual mid year luncheon at the Para Hills Community Club and despite being held in mid winter, the cold weather was no deterrent for our eager clients.

The luncheon was attended by seventy clients from the various Community Packaged Care programs who live throughout the metropolitan regions of Adelaide. Clients were able to meet others who utilise IBF’s services and in one instance a client was able to catch up with an old friend.

All of the members of the Consumer Reference Group attended the luncheon as well as IBF’s C.E.O. Daniel Desteno. A relaxed and pleasant afternoon was had by all with clients having a choice of soup, main meal, salad bar and desert. A number of care staff were also in attendance to ensure that clients needs were met.
The luncheon is a yearly event and we hope to see more clients attend next years event and enjoy a relaxed winters afternoon as well as getting to know some of the staff and clients.

We would also like to thank all of the Consumer Reference Group for all the wonderful work that they do during the year to ensure that quality services are delivered, as well as ensuring that IBF meets the needs of the community.

Il Pranzo Annuale del Gruppo di Riferimento dei Consumatori

Il 28 luglio, il Gruppo di Riferimento del Consumatore ha avuto il suo pranzo annuale di metà anno al Para Hills Community Club . Anche se il pranzo si è svolto in pieno inverno, il freddo non ha fermato il desiderio di uscire dei nostri clienti. Al pranzo hanno partecipato una settantina di clienti dai vari Pachetti dei diversi Programmi di Assistenza Comunitari che risiedono in tutte le varie regioni metropolitane di Adelaide. I clienti sono stati in grado di incontrare persone che utilizzano i servizi IBF e per puro caso un cliente è riuscito a vedersi con un vecchio amico.

Tutti i membri che fanno parte del Gruppo di Riferimento dei Consumatori hanno partecipato al pranzo, come anche il CEO dell’ IBF Daniel Desteno. E’ stato un piacevole e rilassante pomerioggio per tutti i clienti che hanno potuto avere come pasto principale una scelta di minestre, e dal buffet, le insalate ed il dolce. Alcuni membri del personale di assistenza erano presenti per poter garantire che le esigenze dei clienti potevano essere soddisfatte.

Questo pranzo è un evento annuale e ci auguriamo che parteciperanno molti più clienti all’evento del prossimo anno e di trascorrere un rilassato pomeriggio invernale, nonché di avere l’opportunita` di conoscere una parte del personale come anche altri clienti.

Vogliamo cogliere l’occasione di ringraziare tutti i membri che fanno parte del Gruppo di Riferimento per il meraviglioso lavoro che fanno durante l’anno nel controllare la qualità dei servizi provvisti, nonché nell’ assicurare che IBF soddisfa le esigenze della comunità con i suoi servizi.

Surveying CALD carers

The IBF was successful in 2009 in receiving funds from the Department of Health and Ageing for the Community Partners Program to develop an information / training package for Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (CALD) carers.

The project, called Caring for Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Carers is based at the IBF Renown Park site (Padre Pio Centre) and is expected to conclude in 2012.

The package will assist carers to maintain their caring role, targeting specifically members from the Italian, Tatar- Bashkurt and Chinese communities.

The Steering Committee, consisting of partnering service providers, was developed to give the project appropriate support, direction and cultural expertise.

The Steering Committee includes;

Consulting carers from Chinese, Tatar-Bashkurt and Italian communities will be our focus during the months of February to April. Responses from the surveys will be collated to begin creating together a training package that can be used by multicultural or generic service providers to increase the level of support to their CALD carers.

IBF Supports Carnevale 2010

The Co-ordinating Italian Communities Carnevale 2010 was held at Adelaide showgrounds on February 6th & 7th with tens of thousands of people attending this celebration of all things Italian.

As usual, the IBF team was thrilled to be involved as you can see by all the smiling faces in these photos.

Each year the event helps us to raise valuable funds that enable us to keep doing the work we do in the community.

A big thank you to the staff, volunteers and supporters who helped us make Carnevale 2010 a great success for the IBF.

Sewing bee

In 2009, a group of HACC&NRCP Centre Based Program staff got together on a few occasions to make beanbag balls for the program physiotherapy exercises. The sewing bees were held at the Padre Pio Centre. Some of the program volunteers lent a hand while passing through the centre.

Nel 2009, il personale del programma Gruppo Basato al Centro del dell’ HACC & NRCP si riunisce in diverse occasioni per fare delle palle beanbag che vengono usate per il programma degli esercizi di fisioterapia.

Le Signore si riuniscono per cucire presso il Centro Padre Pio. Anche alcuni dei volontari del programma ci hanno aiutato, mentre passavano attraverso il centro.

Grazie a tutti coloro che generosamente hanno donato il loro tempo, le attrezzature e la stoffa per l’attivita`!

Meet our new HR Manager, Richard Collett

We take this opportunity to introduce Richard Collett and welcome him to our team as the new Human Resource (HR) Manager.

Richard comes to us with thirty years of management experience across three key business groups of Finance, Retail and Manufacturing. In this time, Richard spent 19 years working for Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd. Having extensive experience in Human Resource Management, he has worked across the areas of salary administration, payroll, superannuation, industrial relations, OH&S, training & development and implementing cultural change.

Richard holds a degree in both Human Resources Management and Industrial Relations. He has further qualifications in Project Management, Business Management, Training & Assessment and Occupational, Health & Safety. He has worked with numerous community groups and recently completed a five year term with the Defence Reserve Support Council as their Vice Chair.

Richard is committed to assisting IBF with the required industrial changes brought into place by new Federal Awards. He is passionate about work culture enhancement, development of policies and procedures and assisting with employment relationships. We are fortunate to have Richard with us in this capacity and look forward to hearing more from him in the near future.

A tribute to Rosa Limone

Sadly, in December we lost a dear friend.

Rosa was a person full of life and love - for her family - for her friends - and for the Italian Benevolent Foundation.

To many, Rosa Limone was the Italian Village. Along with her husband Frank they have been a part of the Foundation since its inception, heavily involved in fundraising for the building of the Italian Village. Rosa continued this as a member of the Fundraising Committee, working tirelessly with the other members organising dinner dances, Carnevale and other functions.

Her love of the organisation saw Rosa become a staff member in 1987, first as a carer and then as a co-ordinator of activities, as well as assisting residents with shopping trips and appointments. Rosa was the person we went to for our special Feast Days and celebrations. She knew what our residents needed and wanted and always did everything with a smile.

Many residents, families and staff considered Rosa a part of their extended family and were treated the same way - always ready to give a hug and share a cappuccino. The importance of Rosa in the lives of those she touched was evident at her funeral where many people who no longer have connections with the Village attended to pay their respects.

Rosa is someone who will always be remembered but can never be replaced.

Un omaggio a Rosa Limone

Per molte persone Rosa era il villaggio Italiano.

Rosa era una persona piena di vita e voleva bene a tutti ; alla sua famiglia, ai suoi amici, ed alla Fondazione Benevolente Italiana.

Per molti Rosa Limone era il Villaggio Italiano. Insieme con il marito Frank hanno preso parte alla Fondazione sin dal suo inizio, sempre pienamente coinvolti nella raccolta dei fondi per la costruzione del Villaggio Italiano. Rosa ha sempre continuato ad essere membro della Commissione Raccolta dei Fondi, lavorando instancabilmente con gli altri membri organizzando serate danzanti, il Carnevale ed altre funzioni.

La sua passione per l’organizzazione e`stata tale che Rosa e` diventata un membro del personale nel 1987, ha incominciato a lavorare per primo come un’ assistente di cura, dopodiche’ come coordinatrice per le attività, aiutando a trasportare i residenti fare la spesa oppure per andare a degli appuntamenti. Rosa era la persona a cui noi ci rivolgevamo per qualsiasi Festa o celebrazione da fare. Sapeva sempre tutto quello che i nostri residenti desideravano avere, aiutando tutti sempre con un sorriso.

Molti residenti, famiglie e personale consideravano Rosa parte della loro famiglia allargata ed anche loro sono stati trattati allo stesso modo da lei, che era sempre pronta a dare un abbraccio a tutti ed a bere un cappuccino insieme a loro. Rosa e` stata importante nella vita di molte persone infatti questo e` stato molto evidente al suo funerale, dove molte persone che non sono più collegate con il Villaggio hanno partecipato alla bella Funzione Religiosa per darle il loro ultimo rispetto.

Rosa è stata una persona che sarà ricordata per sempre, e che non potrà mai essere sostituita.

IBF College building new international markets

On March 23rd, IBF Healthcare College met with delegates from Heilongjiang Province Linye Health School to help form a partnership between the two organisations.

Linye Health School attracts over 8,000 students per academic year and delivers qualifications in domestic nursing, foreign nursing and dental nursing. On this day, the delegates signed an agreement to establish an international partnership between the two groups. We hope to work with their teaching facility and extend the opportunity to ‘exchange’ teachers offering a sabbatical in this exchange program.

On Monday 29 March IBFHC then met with four delegates from the Tianjin Medical Bureau which is Tianjin City’s official governmental Department of Health. Tianjin is a city of over 12 million people and is the sixth largest city of the People’s Republic of China. Tianjin Medical Bureau is interested to forge wider international relations and we are keen to participate.

It is a great opportunity for the Italian Benevolent Foundation and IBF Healthcare College to meet with such auspicious people and departments as we welcome the opportunity to be working with these groups. We acknowledge all the people that work hard to keep these partnerships going and look forward to the future on an international scale.

Il primo trimestre del 2010 ha certamente portato una serie di risultati positivi per l’ IBF.

Continuiamo ad avere forti relazioni ed alleanze con le diverse organzzazioni, tra cui: enti locali, le Associazioni del Governo Statale e Federale e le Organizzazioni di Diverse Culture.

Il nostro scopo pricipale rimane lo stesso, come anche le nostre prospettive che sono quelle concentrate sulla fiducia, il rispetto, la prosperità, la fede ed un impegno per il benessere degli altri, con l’enfasi di fornire un’assistenza di qualità a tutti i nostri residenti attraverso le nostre strutture, come anche a “più di 2500 membri della comunità”, che vengono assistiti ogni giorno, con una cura ed un’assistenza integrità che continua da anni.

Il nostro obiettivo è quello di continuare per poter essere sempre all’avanguardia nella nostra industria. La risposta a questa necessita`,e`di continuare a lavorare verso approcci nuovi e innovativi per di cura. Alcuni esempi che vorrei condividere con voi includono;

• L’ IBF si avvia ad una riqualificazione di multi-milioni di dollari. La nostra ricerca ha evidenziato che ci sara` una grande richiesta per la cura degli anziani nei prossimi 10 -15 anni nella comunità in Sud Australia, con oltre 24.000 richiedenti. Per questo motivo che la nostra organizzazione ha sempre risposto all’ opportunità di estensione sin da quando abbiamo iniziato i nostri servizi nel 1974.

• Elaborare nuove iniziative per poter sempre migliorare il nostro lavoro e gli ambienti di vita, la cura per il nostro personale, favorendo il loro sviluppo professionale per poter migliorare la cura per i nostri residenti e clienti, focalizzandoci continuamente sulle cure dirette al consumatore.

• Tenerci sempre al passo con le nuove tecnologie, di cure pratiche e mediche, attraverso i nostri forti legami con i professionisti del settore.

• Il nostro IBF Healthcare College, un continuo sviluppo del nostro gruppo per poter raggiungere ‘la pratica migliore’, inoltre offre anche l’opportunita` a coloro che vogliono fare una carriera per poter diventare assistenti di cura, infermieri, e nel management. Il nostro e’ l’ ambiente ideale che permette queste sviluppo.

La cura per gli anziani, può essere un ruolo molto gratificante e soddisfacente, che consente un grande apprezzamento e di sviluppo in compagnia di persone sagge, che hanno un patrimonio di conoscenza e di un rispetto reciproco. Per coloro che desiderano intraprendere una carriera in questo gratificante settore, oltre ad estendere l’esperienza si puo’ avere un formidabile stile di vita come un miglioramento della propria carriera.

IBF Forges Ahead in 2010

The first quarter for 2010 has indeed resulted in a number of positive outcomes for the IBF.

We continue to forge strong relationships and alliances with many stakeholders, including; local, state and federal government partnerships and culturally diverse organisations.

Our fundamental purpose has never changed; with a focus on trust, respect, prosperity, faith and a commitment for the wellbeing of others, we provide quality care to all of our residents across our facilities. Additionally we help over 2500 members in the community, assisting them each and every day, with ongoing care and support to age with integrity.

Our aim is to ensure that we continue to remain at the forefront of our industry. In responding to this need, we continue to strive towards new and innovative approaches to care. Some examples I would like to share with you include;

• The IBF embarking on a multi-million dollar redevelopment. Our research demonstrates that our community will have the highest care needs over the next 10-15 years in South Australia, with over 24,000 recipients. We have been responding to growth opportunities since our inception in 1974.

• Devising new initiatives to continue improving our working and living environments, caring for our staff, encouraging professional development and improving the care for our residents and clients with a focus on care becoming increasingly consumer directed.

• Keeping abreast with new technological, medical and care practices, through our strong links with industry professionals.

• Our IBF Healthcare College, enabling the ongoing development of our team to achieve ‘better practice’, in addition to the development of those seeking to establish a career in the fields of carers, nursing, and management, in an environment that embraces such development.

Caring for the elderly, can be one of the most rewarding and satisfying roles, enabling a greater appreciation to grow and develop in the company of those with great wisdom, a wealth of knowledge and mutual respect. For those seeking to embark on a career in this rewarding industry, the experience also extends to a formidable blend of lifestyle and career enhancement.

Welcome to the first edition of IBF News

From the desk of CEO Daniel Desteno

This has certainly been a big year for the IBF and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank every team member, staff, volunteer, supporter and supplier for your continuing dedication to the organisation and the community we support.
Since 1974 our mission, in one form or another, has always been to enhance the lives of our aged community and every day in hundreds of ways, and most of them unseen and unrecognised, you help to fulfil that mission and I sincerely thank you.
I know you’re aware that earlier this year Marcia Fisher stepped down from the position of CEO after 15 years of service to the IBF and our community. Marcia’s contribution to the IBF has been instrumental in the organisations growth and development and we will remain forever grateful. Her vision was profound, enabling the IBF to be at the forefront of industry trends and practices.
I’m excited to have taken over the reigns from Marcia and to carry on the vision and continue to build on our strong foundation. My involvement with the IBF began in 2007 when I worked as the organisations Risk Consultant prior to taking on the General Manager role in late 2008, and Iook forward to leading the IBF into the next season.
Over the next 10+ years we’ll see the number of 1st generation Italian immigrants peak alongside the growing aged population in general and the need to support and care for this pioneering generation is paramount. I take on this position and the responsibility that comes with it very seriously and with great pride.
But I’m only one person amongst our team of 400 and we all need to continue to meet the everyday challenges with a positive ‘can do’ attitude and the caring spirit that defines us.
The work we do makes a vital contribution to our community and we should all be very proud of our involvement. Every day I see the genuine and unconditional love and care we give to our residents and community members. We’re not the biggest Aged Care organisation in town but size doesn’t equate to quality. We’re people helping people and it is the thousands of one on one interactions which happen every day that is what really matters to us.
As we head into Christmas I’d like to sincerely wish both you and your family a very Merry Christmas and look forward to working alongside you in 2010.

IBF Staff Family Christmas Party

Over 200 IBF staff, volunteers and their families turned out at Rymil Park on Sunday 22nd December to help celebrate Christmas.

Patrizia, Dewi and the IBF Marketing Committee organised a BBQ for lunch, jumping castle, face painting, a piniata and even presents from Santa who arrived early in the afternoon, much to the delight of the more than 80 children who attended.

Lunch was spread over a couple of hours and there was plenty to go around with Rita firing up the BBQ again in the afternoon to cook a second round for anyone still hungry.

The Marketing Committee had the day planned to a ‘T’ but couldn’t predict that when we arrived the power in the park would be disconnected due to some unfinished maintenance works. Power was required to inflate the jumping castle and boil the urns for tea and coffee. After some hustling and negotiating with council workers a generator was initially organised but wasn’t able to put out enough power to get the job done. Thankfully the council was able to get an electrician on site fairly quickly who reconnected the power and we soon had the jumping castle up and going to the relief of the kids, their parents and the organisers.

Despite predictions of rain the weather turned out to be a perfect 23° with clear skies most of the day which was a big relief after an unseasonal week of 40 plus temperatures in mid November.

The day was a great chance for IBF staff, volunteers and their families to get together socially and relax after a year of hard work and everyone who attended will agree that it was a great success.

Community Care Packages

(incorporating - Community Aged Care Packages, Extended Aged Care at Home Packages, Veterans Home Care and Private Services)

Over the last few months the Community Care Team has been busy in ensuring that quality services have been provided to all our clients, with Post Care Worker audits regularly being conducted and a Client Focus Group organised on the 18th September 2009. The Client Focus Group was held at the new Padre Pio Centre at Renown Park, with over 40 clients attending. The afternoon gave IBF an opportunity to ask clients their views in relation to their Rights and Responsibilities, as well as obtain responses from clients re their understanding of having an advocate represent them and the various Advocacy Services available to them.

At the end of July 2009 IBF obtained funding for a further 10 Community Aged Care Packages and 5 Extended Aged Care Packages for the Port Adelaide/Enfield Inner North/Inner East region. These packages commenced in September and with the number of people requiring assistance to remain living at home, were filled in record time.

At the same time, IBF was also successful in obtaining funding for a new service, being 10 Extended Aged Care Packages for the Aboriginal community. These packages will provide assistance to Aboriginal persons who reside throughout the metropolitan regions and Sandy Krake (Team Leader Northern Region) will be coordinating these packages.

Over the last couple of months two of the Community Care Team were nominated for Staff Member of the Month - Antonietta DiNiro (Team Leader Eastern Region) and Sandy Krake (Team Leader Northern Region). Both of these team members were nominated due to their tireless and creative efforts in ensuring that extra supports were put into place so that a client could return home - both of these staff members went above and beyond to ensure that the client and the family's needs were met.

On behalf of IBF I would like to welcome all of our newly recruited staff members, who have joined the Community Care Team over the last three months, they are - Kristina Cameron-Huffa, Karen Davidson-Parish, Silvana Devarti, Maria Fratamico, Laelle Knibbs, Libby Konieck, Silvana Moscatiello, Pina Palmieri, Rosa Rapetti, Maria Ruotolo and Lisa Sammut. We take this opportunity in wishing them all the best in their new career.

Meet Chef Kylie

They say “An army marches on its stomach.” Well here at Burton our residents march on a daily-changing menu which delights the senses, and provides enjoyment and pleasure from food inspired by our Chef’s talent and her great team.

I often look at the fascination of the meals coming through from the kitchen and headed to each of the separate dining rooms.
It’s amazing the precision in which it’s done, like the air traffic control of the kitchens.

Cooking isn’t the only issue. There’s the planning, the ordering & the clean up. Here at Domus Operosa, Burton, Kylie and her team do it all.
Kylie and her team, do such a great job and nothing is too much trouble - the service the team provides is perfect, and as always the food is superb.
We would all like you all to know that we really appreciate your efforts & we are fortunate to have you with us.

HACC Consumer Group

A Consumer Group was formed for clients receiving IBF HACC Low Level - In Home Care services in the southern metropolitan regions.
The first consumer meeting was held in June 2009 followed by a lunch at the Padre Pio Centre.
15 clients attended to have input and discuss a range of topics related to the service. The feedback from those who attended was very positive.
After consultation with the clients, it was decided that the consumer meetings will be held 6 monthly at the Padre Pio Centre.
The next meeting is to be held in November 2009.

Life Foundation and Pronto Programs

Our commitment is to provide a culturally and linguistically appropriate Support Service to frail elderly Italians living in the western metropolitan including the inner south/west metropolitan regions of Adelaide.
The Life Foundation Program is seeking to expand it's program by recruiting more volunteers so that we can meet the needs of our clients.
Some Pronto clients have repeatedly expressed that they would like to personally meet the volunteers who ring them. Volunteers have expressed they would also like to meet the clients. We have started arranging with clients and volunteers for a mutually convenient time for them to meet one per week so that they can still ring other clients.
Currently our volunteers ring clients on the Pronto program twice a week. More volunteers are needed to meet the demanding needs of this program.
Support Sessions for our volunteers are held 3 times per year and we either provide training and support or to discuss any issues/ideas at these sessions.
Relevant Organisational training is offered to our volunteers and we are having a higher number attending than previously.
A "Spaghettata Day" for all HACC & NRCP centre based volunteers will be held at Padre Pio Centre, Renown Park so that they can meet fellow volunteers from other programs. Volunteers have offered to contribute by supplying and cooking pasta. Another has offered to bring in sweets. A date yet to be decided for later this year.
IBF is working closely with Volunteering SA and will feature in their quarterly Vitality Magazine showcasing the work our volunteers perform.

PROGRAMMI LIFE FOUNDATION E PRONTO

Il nostro impegno e` di fornire dei servizi di supporto culturalmente e linguisticamente appropriati per gli Italiani che vivono nella area metropolitana ovest (inclusa la zona sud - ovest) di Adelaide.
Il Life Foundation Program sta cercando di sviluppare il programma trovando ancora volontari per affrontare i bisogni dei nostri clienti.
Alcune clienti del programma Pronto hanno chiesto diverse volte di conoscere personalmente i volontare che le telefonano. Anche i volontari hanno chiesto di conoscere i clienti. Ho incomminciato ad organnizzare di portare i volontari a conoscere i clienti, uno ogni settimana, cosi` possano ancora chiamare l'altri clienti.
Al momento i nostri volontari telefonano i clienti del programma Pronto due volte alla settimana. Abbiamo bisogno di altri volontari per affrontare i bisogni impegnativi di questo programma.
Svolgiamo Sessioni d'Appoggio per i nostri volontari 3 volte all'anno e provvediamo formazione e appoggio o per discutere problemi/idea.
Vengono offerte ai nostri volontari formazione pertinente dell'organizzazione e abbiamo piu` volontari di prima presente per queste formazione.
Una "Spaghettata" per tutti i volontari dei programmi HACC e NRCP basate in un centro si svolgera` al Centro Padre Pio, Renown Park per conoscere volontari di altri programmi. I volontari hanno offerto di contribuire provvedendo e cucinando la pasta. Un'altra ha offerto di portare il dolce. La data da decidere per piu` tardi nell'anno.
